In a smaller cities where there are no so many kids fencing, it’s pretty common to have a mixed competitions where girls and boys will face each other, because there is not enough kids to compete in a separate boys/girls groups. I’ve being watching a lot of competitions like that, and while boys are usually fence more aggressively with more running and jumping on piste, girls tend to be more technical and often that gives them some extra advantage later in their competitions.
Fencing with boys, especially with bigger boys, girls learn no to trust their parrys more and be more strategic when fencing. Remember, that fencing is not just about speed and muscles, it’s also about playing the chess game against opponent – trying to predict their move and prepare response which will bring the point.
